James,

It's the learning curve and the switch. See, I know what I know. I don't know what you know. Y'know? Plus, the switch will be painful and ugly, even people trying to paint a nice picture say that. Well, I've also heard it's harder anyway. If possible, work less, live more, oui. But first, sweat out a big change and learn a bunch of new stuff? Ugh.

As for Seth, I read him daily. But, and this is a big but, I've been reading him since... *cough* for many years. In books. Does anyone read those anymore? I do, voraciously, much to the detriment of my purse. I'm traditional like that. I adore his take, when it's fresh, but like anyone writing daily, it's not always a gem. If he were asking me I'd say cut back to a few times a week and they'll all be head-nodders.

If I were a big big big boy like him, maybe I wouldn't want to deal with comments either. On the other hand, he does answer all emails (all the ones he answers) personally. No staff. It's how he chooses to spend his time. He's got no need to "encourage community." He's got fans.

Regards,

Kelly

Hmm... What makes you think that WP is harder or any different to run than TP? In fact, with all the coolio plugins and features, you might find out you save time and have an easier life. Work less, live more, no? ;)

As for Seth, I haven't been to his blog in months. I know, sacrilege and all that... but I don't get it. *shrugs* I'm always the guy doing what other people don't anyways :)

John,

Seth has his say on the subject here.

Brian, Brian. I am in love with his writing. My launch series was inspired by him. Link, link, write relevant comments which forward the conversation, repeat. Realize the love is unrequited. This is okay, because I do love forwarding the conversations, more than I love Brian Clark, and he really gets good ones started.

Really enjoyed Persuasion Part 1, John, and looking forward to the sequels. Thanks for stopping by.

Regards,

Kelly

P.S. For another perspective on TypePad concerns, read Trigger Words and Censorship And Book Titles and Such, and the comments, which is an important prelude (but won't make much sense as a TypePad issue) until you read Book Titles, Irony, Mirror on Mirror, wherein yours truly tried with author Tim Berry to fix a boo-boo at the Blue LilyPad and had zero success.

I have taken mild flak for staying with TypePad.

Mild? Mild?

I have an open mind. And a full schedule. I'm thinking about it, but I don't want one more thing to do. Just think of all the millions of trackbacks, links, comments elsewhere, etc. that would point to zilch if I switched. Millions. That alone is terrifying.

Is Anil Dash listening? CommentLuv and "Subscribe to," dude. Easy to install and available at all levels, especially the Advanced level! Grab current innovations, and make new ones happen. 'Cause future VIBs (Very Important Bloggers) are going to go elsewhere. I don't mean me, although it'd be nice to be a future VIB, I mean all kinds of people are making choices every day.

Growing your business is all about Maximum Customer Experience, Mr. Dash. Not "good enough" CE.

Hello Kelly

Those are typical responses web geeks give. They give responses like, "did you try unplugging it and plugging it back in?" I swear there must be a book of responses somewhere for them.

I'm with the MwP guys. WordPress is nice because you have so much control, however, I have to admit I've never used TypePad. Personally if I were in your position and liked TypePad, I'd keep them on watch. If they continually fail to expand and move on with the times then I'd ditch them. Otherwise, you'll be growing and they won't give you the tools.

About Seth. I'm curious, what is his reasoning for not allowing comments? I've wondered about that.

Personally, I find his marketing ideas insightful - maybe because he thinks along the lines I've always thought, so I can relate. The really cool thing about him, though, he might not have comments enabled but I've emailed him a few times and he responds quickly.

On the other hand, I am a big fan of Copyblogger but Brian has never replied to any of my emails?

Anyway, nice to visit your site and thanks for leaving a comment on mine :)

Like I said on MwP, a new platform is always a hassle to learn at first, but to me, it's worth it. It's not as difficult as you might think.

Hello, boys, you certainly keep odd hours.

Harry, the new comment button is much better. A bit difficult to read but now we're quibbling. If there hadn't been focus on it in the first place who'd notice.

MWP, Word Press is HARDER. Maybe to you, not hard, but to me it's one more THING. Run business, delight clients, raise kid, think of family and friends (that's more honest than "have a life")... convert to WP? Then maintain WP? Eeeek! I have one foot out the door but the other foot is happy, and nailed in place with funky loyalty.

James, about Seth, yes I know. I could have gone on about that (he gives his reasoning on the blog, BTW) but this post was already long enough! To reach out and touch him all you can do is trackback, which I do occasionally if more relevant than this. You guys were all embroiled in this so it was appropriate. Besides, I got those eyeballs again, and this time you read something.

Regards,

Kelly

That's my question as well - will you be switching? I read this whole post from top to bottom, and it only reminded me exactly why we'd stayed on Typepad less than a week before making the switch.

If you want community, you need to build it. Typepad isn't going to help you.

Re: Seth Godin - You'll note that his blog has all commenting features disabled. Every single one. He may have a following, but he sure doesn't have a community.

Sounds to me like Type Pad is losing ground. I totally believe that if you focus too closely on the past, that's exactly where you'll stay.

I am not a fan of Type Pad, never will be. Your post proves the point I've been trying to make to several clients that Type Pad isn't all it's cracked up to be.

So, since the circumstances are beyond your control, I won't give you s**t for not having a subscribe to comments button :)

(but I did fix our comment button!)

Are you going to switch to Word Press now?
