Wednesday Words
To Go Where Your VisionPoints, a few inspiration points for you and your business.
Bein’ optimistic after you’ve got ever-thing
you want don’t count.
—Kin Hubbard
Not quite blind faith. Be prepared. Do your research. Then grab a little giddy optimism, and do what you believe you were put here to do.
Why? Because nobody likes to buy from a downer.
Simple, yes. I’ll bet you have a dozen examples of when you bought from someone because their enthusiasm was infectious, or when negativity drove you away from a purchase.
Be optimistic now, and soon you’ll have more things to be optimistic about.
Grow and be well,
Kelly Erickson

HURRAYYY!! Kelly, my heartfelt congrats at such a lovely new site. I notice the subtle yet stylin’ differences. Everything looks great! I subscribed even before reading your first post.
And thanks for starting off my morning with both a shock and inspiration: WHAT, its WEDNESDAY already?? And then, yes, it’s so true. My glass is going to be FULL today!
Enjoy this wonderful day!

Okay, one more thing: holy crap did you ever put a lot of work into this!! And it shows. Not only does it look spiffy, but you also have a lot of great stuff here!

Steph,
Thank you thank you. I’m so glad folks are finding their way over and enjoying it.
Because sometimes it’s all about me, I’ll whine again… approaching 100 hours of work right now (yes, I track time on it). I estimate another 10–20 left. Considering that a great deal of the styling was going to stay the exact same, that’s saying something about the behind-the scenes stuff.
A lot of hindsight lessons besides the Tip last Saturday, though that is the big one. One snippet of code could have eliminated at least 30 hours of work if I had read my own Tip 7 months ago, even if I went with TypePad, but sadly… I didn’t know it yet!
Regards,
Kelly
P.S. Now I can never recommend you to anyone, because you typo’d it’s. What will the neighbors think?
There is a plug-in for letting people fix their typos, I wanted to put it in because I hate seeing my own, but those Men With Pens had a very convincing argument and talked me out of it months ago. Typos stay.
18 June 2008, 10:50 am
WHAT?! What was their convincing argument?? That it’s fun to watch editors go all OCD?
18 June 2008, 11:04 am
Steph,
No. They suggested folks could write something foul, have it go out in the email to everybody with Subscribe to Comments, then hit “edit” and write a nice la-ti-da comment to be printed on the blog for the ages.
Now I’ll grant you I can’t imagine folks taking the time to do that, but just the thought of having it happen makes me shudder, so I was swayed in spite of just hating how often I make boo-boos and can’t get at them on other people’s blogs.
Blame the Men.
Later,
Kelly

Groovy new pad, Kelly. When do I get to meet your new boyfriend?
All your hard work paid off. I hope you are enjoying WP. I like it much better than blogger. Check out all the neat plugins and widgets you can get! Just like a kid in a Candy Store. And free templates! I’m thinking I’ll try something with 3 columns next. Probably not for awhile.
The thing I don’t understand is how to migrate to the next version of WP. They don’t make it easy. I’m waiting until they make it easy. That is beyone my capabilities. I would probably have to study it for two weeks or so. God.
I learned this sales trick when I sold pants. But you can’t be too cheery, though. That also puts people off. Honesty is the best policy.

Ellen,
Kid in candy store must be on leash to avoid checking out every cool gizmo, though. Luckily I had two things that were bugging me, I’ve installed the two things, and I’m done. I’m not much of a window shopper, so I don’t get tempted.
Oh, yeah. A generally optimistic outlook is plenty. Don’t get smiley about my pants!

Kelly

@Kelly: Ah! Hmmm, okay, good reason. I never in a million years would have thought of it…

Steph,
I feel that way, too. Maybe it’s overly cautious, but I’m not sure I want to find out. As a designer, I backed up their reasoning with “and it would look cluttered.” That way I feel like I’m not just being paranoid, I’m being tastefully streamlined, too.

Whoa, love the new sofa. Chairs look great. That is some painting on the wall too.
Love the new digs.
And no getting too smily over the pants…can scare them…:)))
But as Famous Amos always said, enthusiasm, WILL make all the difference.

Janice,
I’m thinking curtains…
Nah. I like the clean look. The blinds will do just fine.
I love Famous Amos. That man could make anybody enthusiastic. I’m smiling just thinking of him.

Yes. I like the sleekness of the blinds.
Famous Amos is a god. Show up. Have something good and be enthusiastic about it.
Ooh, nifty buttons over on the side.. .must go see what you have there.

Thanks Brett, Janice,
The Steve and Famous Amos. Two inspirational geniuses.
(I printed that speech out about a year ago and I keep it in a binder of beyond-awesome inspirations… right at the front, like the Mac fanboy I am, he he.)
Later,
Kelly
P.S. I want… to be done relinking things here… and I’m optimistic, but I haven’t got what I want yet. Must keep plugging away.
P.P.S. Janice, you’ve got a misspelling in your link. Careful, because it’s autofilling (like a virus, you may be spreading it elsewhere now), and that means our wonderful friend CommentLuv can’t find your last post. I’ll go fix the spelling so people can still click through to your awesome site.
18 June 2008, 8:06 pm
So Steve and Famous Amos, that would be a fun collaboration.
(Thanks I fixed the spelling here I think.)
Hey Crystal gave us props on her post. Very sweet. Oh Time for So You Think You Can Dance. TIme to unwind. Good job on the new site. Serious pat on the back from me.

Yes, I taught a workshop called “Enthusiasm Sells” To Realtors. It was very popular. No one wants to buy a house from a Realtor who is walking through the house looking like “You’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all”

Awww….who is Kin Hubbard?
I must not be very well-read…I don’t know half the people you get quotes from.

Dear Perplexed,
He was a U.S. cartoonist who said a lot of very funny and true stuff. Will Rogers said he was a great humorist, which is pretty high praise.
A couple of other good ones:
“A good listener is usually thinking about something else.”
“When a fellow says, ‘It ain’t the money but the principle of the thing,’ it’s the money.”
“Boys will be boys, and so will a lot of middle-aged men.”
“Nobody ever forgets where he buried the hatchet.” (That’s the one I’ve heard quoted most.)
Don’t you know that’s what your down time at work is for—looking up trivia like who is Kin Hubbard?
Oh and by the way, I collect quotations from everywhere, sometimes without an author attached and I have to see if somebody on the Internet knows who said/wrote the thing; sometimes with an author attached and then I do a bit of research to find out who the heck the person is.
I have favorite folks whom I could quote all day—the Barrymores, Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, Steve Jobs, Stephen Covey, Errol Flynn, Mae West (though most of what the last two said don’t belong here)—but an awful lot of them are just great things somebody said. I figure before I go broadcasting to the world I should make sure the person I’m quoting isn’t unsavory in every other way except for one brilliant thing he/she said, or it could come back to bite me in the behind.
My quotation-collecting habit probably makes me look better read than I am.
Until later,
Kelly

OMG two smileys in one comment. Darn you, Brett! Your good cheer is rubbing off on me!!!
19 June 2008, 1:42 pm
Wendi,
Heh. A lot of realtors have that glassy look in their eyes. Couldn’t you pretend you’re excited? For most people it’s not an everyday thing, and I think some forget how special looking for a new home is to their clients.
Enthusiasm Sells is an excellent title for a workshop in almost any field. I’d go!
