Wednesday Words
To Go Where Your VisionPoints, a few inspiration points for you and your business.
If A is a success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. Work is
x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut.
— Albert Einstein
You won’t forget to work right now. Who could forget work at a time like this? (You must write, “at a time like this,” in italics. So it sounds dramatic. Because “times like these” are made for drama.)
I know you’ve heard a million times about the value of listening. I think he recommends it wonderfully.
Here’s what strikes me about this quotation:
Albert Einstein, famous for his work, says Go Play.
I hope you’ll be famous for your work one day, too.
If you don’t make time for play, I firmly believe you won’t get to that day. So try not to get your knickers in a knot over things we can’t control, and instead, take control of your attitude: Laugh. Run. Make a horrible joke at work, and get someone to spit out their coffee. Take time with your kid, your niece, your grandchildren. Draw stick figures. Kiss your spouse.
Go Play. That’s a big part of “having it all,” and you can have that part right away.
Grow and be well,
Kelly Erickson

Kelly,
Play is more important sometimes that we realize, even at work - somewhere along the line, people here at the Factory forgot how to play, where play used to mean “regular coffee breaks where you’d share information” or “wandering around asking folks ‘what the heck are you working on?’ to learn something new”. Companies like Google get this and encourage employees to spend 20 percent of their at work time on personal projects. We wouldn’t be using such great products from Google if play were not encouraged.
(Now my problem is I play too much!)

Brett,
‘Zactly. I’ve seen a couple of documentaries on Pixar, and they could hardly help but be creative, the way they encourage “thinking outside the box”—there’s no box left!
Most big corporations, the company’s a box, they stick you in your box, and big surprise, your ideas are never bigger than that box. A waste of the grand capacity of human brains. It happens in little companies, too—the owner wakes up one day and wonders how many months or years it’s been since they played. It’s a critical skill.
Individually, you keep your brain sharp with “too much” play. Whether The Factory wants to use that creative and sharp brain… too bad for them that they don’t. Boo.
Keep playing!
Regards,
Kelly

Kelly,
I don’t plan to stop playing until long after I’m dead… if that makes sense (hey, part Viking, part zombie).

Kelly,
Great Life Balance post! So simple and yet so wise. But I can’t believe you made me do some kind of algebra equation so early in the morning. Luckily I like you so much so I forgive you.
Running off to play now…..

Kelly, I think that’s my worst problem.
I’m so damned serious all the time, and I’m involved in my work way too much.
Sometimes I think I need to LIGHTEN UP and relax a little. I’ve forgotten how to stop and smell the roses.
Someone help me.
For THE LOVE OF GOD, won’t someone PLEASE HELP ME?

Yeah Friar, you dodgarned workaholic, you need to kick back a bit, have a pint once in a while and maybe start up a funny blog or something.

You probably already know this one. But there’s that famous photograph of Einstein playfully sticking out his tongue.

That speaks volumes. He knew how to laugh at himself. That’s all right in my books.

Wendi, Brett, and esp. Friar, you serious scientist, you…
Please, please, would you all take a break from your serious, workaholic days.
Go play.
I guess I’m preaching to the choir today!
(& Friar… yes, I love that photo.)
Until later (somebody’s got to go do some x!),

Amy,
Then you’re 2/3 of the way to A. But I don’t want you to nail Z too well, then I won’t get to have as much fun reading WFH.

I love that Einstein, always something new to learn about - and from - him. The equation has recently become much easier to solve for A for me personally, I have turned my play into my work! Now if we can only figure out a way to monetize my lovely bride’s play…
23 October 2008, 8:21 am
@Stephen,
“I have turned my play into my work!” Yay for you! That’s the way we all want to feel. I’m lucky like that, too, at least, most days…
Until later,
Kelly

Actually, seriously, I haven’t been playing enough lately. Thankgoodness Brett and Friar (I believe) are coming over to play soon. Apparently, they are experts at it, so they can mentor me. *chuckle*

Panther,
Brett and Friar coming over to get you and your Lion all riled up? Lucky lady. You’ll need a break from that break afterwards, but it sounds like fun.
A play mentor. What a cool idea that is!
Steph,
Ah, that’s another post. Is there a 12-step program for play addicts?
Let’s see, we start a play mentor program and then a 12-step for folks who can’t get enough, we figure out the value proposition and monetize it… Play, Inc.?

Thanks for the reminder to play! That’s the one thing that I’ve left off my massive to-do list… I have play time slotted somewhere after my editing assignment but _before_ I die
I’ve gotta work on this “play” thing!
Oh, and I’ve subscribed to your blog <3

RLD,
Welcome to MCE!
Hold on a sec, I have to edit my to-do list…
*scratches in before the word “play”: “Before I Die”*
I knew there was something I forgot! Thanks so much for your comment, and I look forward to you joining the shenanigans at this supposedly serious blog!

Kelly
