All I can say is that this is especially true of writers. Perhaps (i.e. definitely) it is because of our fragile egos. A few words of praise, and we are the best writers in the world, ready to give you more soaring content. But without the sentiment, we start second-guessing every word that we put down. Ugh!

Same is true of photographers… writing and photography are both forms of communication. When we are successful at bridging the gap between writer and reader, creator and viewer, we feel great. It’s what we set-out to do.

Graham,
Oh, since starting this little venture here, I have noticed that. My ego has more hairline cracks in it than ever!
Todd,
And designers, and chefs, children with their teachers, adults with their significant others…
I think he got it right when he said all of us. I’d be hard pressed to think of someone who doesn’t feel that way when they’ve “done good.”
Amy,
And I happily, I don’t quite understand. You can’t RT but you can Tweet, yes? I think the “Twitter” button (under “Share”, see the + button up there ^^ ) is supposed to make it completely painless…
*sigh* Can’t do everything.

Woot! Caught the tweet thanks, Amy–Silly me, I WAS sketching…( Kelly your updates get to me way later. Go figure) Oh fun, it’s a fabulous quote… and group hug for Graham because he shared his feelings.
*Ducks and covers.* You know I love ya.
I couldn’t agree more with Todd. Well, we set out to explore something that intrigues us intensely, but when we can capture it in a way that lets others share the up tick in our pulse, well that’s the good stuff.
The best thing a gallery owner ever told me was that she had never had people want to go up and touch the paintings as she had with my (at the time) show.
Makes me smile and want to “bring it” even more when I think of that.
Love this quote. Going on favorites list.

Amy,
Ooh, fancy.
& the love is mutual, I’m sure.
I knew there was a reason I installed that cute little plugin!
Joely,
Hello, and welcome to one of my favorite tell-it-like-it-is writers!
Glad you like the quote. Thanks for stopping by!
Wendi,
Well, I guess now you can be the reTweeter. That’s supposed to be a good thing, right?
Every once in a while I throw a little P.S. at the bottom of the post, mentioning the Share button. It’s one of those compromises so the darn blog won’t become junky, but I know, every compromise has its limits. Twitter button out of sight, out of mind. Oy!
And your comment about the quotation—*so* true! (Nobody try to take me up on it, k?) Yes! If I know I’m making a big difference, and I get that happy puppy look from someone, that’s magic. Other people’s happy makes me happy.

Janice,
Thanks. Now I’m getting the happy-writer feeling.
If you get email updates, I understand. A long time ago, I used to have it set for morning delivery but they were so-o spotty that I set it for afternoon. They said they can’t guarantee delivery for a.m. because everybody wants it, but I found sometimes it didn’t go at all. Grr. At least it shows up properly every day now.
(I schedule my posts for just after 5 a.m. EST, so if you ever get an early-morning hankering you can just click directly over, BTW. No post by 5:30=no post.)
Wait—how’d you catch a Tweet while sketching?

@Janice – thanks for the hug! The only reason I truly bared my soul is because I had some great feedback from a client today. So my ego is sufficiently stroked! (For now…)
@Kelly – I wonder why the ego fractures so easily when it comes to writing? Maybe because (for me anyway) I identify myself *as* as writer, as opposed to say a person who writes? So when it doesn’t go right, it’s more of a reflection on Me (capital ‘m’)…?
What about other artists? Janice, do you feel the same need to have your art accepted? (Now it’s your turn to bare all…!)

Graham – I don’t know why it is so, but I feel that need as well to have the ego stroked. Maybe that is more primal even than a desire to create nice things.
I think creativity is such an intimate process; it takes a lot of clarity for a rejection of my creation to not be seen as a rejection of myself. Sometimes I get that clear, and then it’s all a fun play – and I welcome criticism those days. The more stressed or tired I am, the less distance I have on it and the more easily I get hurt by other’s critical comments. It’s almost like my reaction to criticism is a direct and sensitive measure of my own clarity at the time.
Todd Smith’s last blog post…California Dreaming…
4 February 2009, 3:47 pm
@Todd — exactly — a rejection of the creation is a rejection of the self.
But on the other hand, I usually take criticism fairly well (about my writing that is. If you don’t like the way I do dishes though, watch out…!) So perhaps it’s more of a “recognition” of self. Tell me it’s bad, tell me it’s good, but just don’t say nothing! That’s when I get really worried.
(I hear Glenn Close’s voice in my head: “I will not be ignored!” Time to hide the rabbits…)

Keep in mind I soak up praise like a crust of bread soaks up water…
I think people are so starved for praise in general that it isn’t funny. And yet, no one taught us how to give praise properly, or how to praise those who need it in different ways, that it’s a vicious cycle. Can’t praise, don’t know how to praise, need praise…

James,
yeah, you crusty ol’loaf, I know just what you mean.
I had one of those dads that didn’t believe in praising people. Guess actually I still do, he is still out there I suppose, although I don’t think about it too much.
When a kid grows up with one of those kind of parents, its amazing how much you can learn to crave praise. I used to get straight A’s and he would look at my report card and ask if there were A +’s or if there was any extra credit I could do.
It was never good enough.
So..you learn to walk away or yell a lot.
I’ve done both. Walking away takes a lot less energy.
I try to make sure my kids get praise. Legitimate praise.

Graham- You would….(.artist shakes head and makes note to include/ hide A Very Large Array in current piece). It depends who’s telling me what. It’s more important for me to know inside that I nailed it. When that happens I get goose bumps. When someone I really respect, tells me that too…well, that is a great fist bump, major. And then when a client HAS to have it… well, how cool is that? When the work speaks to someone, I love hearing about it. It is after all a call and response. And yes, it tells me I am connecting, as good art should. And on certain days, or I should say on uncertain days, a small bit of hey, you know what I like about that, CAN make a difference to me. I would be lying if I said it didn’t.
Janice Cartier’s last blog post…Blue Skies
4 February 2009, 4:12 pm
@ Wendi – My family doesn’t praise. It’s criticism all the way, so you either learn to read between the lines or get hurt an awful lot.
And then you grow up not really knowing how to say to people that you need to hear words that mean something at face value, and you also grow up not really knowing how to say that you don’t mean to withhold the good stuff; you just don’t know how to say it.
And like you, I try to praise my kids a lot. Which is difficult, because then there’s all that “watch you don’t tell girls they’re pretty; tell them they’re smart” thing… *sigh*

@Janice – “And on certain days, or I should say on uncertain days…” I love that! I just might have to steal that sometime…
It’s funny, for me and I know for some other writers, it is the opposite. I get very nervous when I “nail it”. Because a lot of the time, it’s actually miles off the mark. It’s the stuff that makes me wonder “is this good enough?” that usually scores well.

whoops…should have gone for smart…it must mean I think she is dumb
If I tell her how smart she is…that must mean I think she looks ugly today…

Also, I can commiserate with your nervousness when you think you’ve “nailed it.” The funny thing is I’m willing to accept the praise for when I unintentionally “nail it” but get defensive if someone says I didn’t nail what I thought I had. Don’t you just love finding weakness in yourself? hehehe!

@Kelly – Sham Wow – You’ve no doubt discovered that Sham Wow is a high-tech towel that absorbs 12x its weight in water. It really sells itself.
How I interpret Janice’s remark (and correct me if I’m wrong): it’s both a compliment AND a reminder that we should soak up the compliments we’re getting now and save them for our creative “dark” times. Kind of a “kudos” type thing, but with extra-special “hang-in-the-cat-poster” meaning for arteests.
And James. (As I know he doesn’t put himself in the arteest category despite his artistic tendencies… lol)
Chocolate Croissant I’m not sure if they are popular in the US, but in Canada we have éclairs. Kind of like a doughnut hot dog bun on its side, filled with whip cream and slathered with chocolate on top. I imagine similar in taste to the pain au chocolat (I haven’t had one before) but with the added whip cream.
‘Course people might interpret this to mean “cream puff” so perhaps that’s not the look you were going for…

Graham,
Yes.If you are offered a sincere meaningful one treasure it, visit it wen you need to. It’s can be like a touchstone. But this too: Pleasing is great, I love it, but pleasing that inner judge is what sustains us for the long haul.
Pain au chocolate has no cream puff factor to it. It is a fine buttery croissant with high cocoa content chocolate striped in the center. If it is warmed the chocolate is melted and fluid. If it is at room temperature you get a solid crunch of rich chocolate bar.
