Wednesday Words
To Go Where Your VisionPoints, a few inspiration points for you and your business.
You know the worst part? The people who are the most prone to [fear of rejection] are the ones who have the best stuff. The ones who need to share it with the world. The remarkable ones.
Because if you’re really putting it out there, if it has a piece of your heart in it, then you’re horribly horribly vulnerable. And rejection completely feels like it’s about you.
I have no good advice other than, if it makes you want to throw up, you’re probably doing it right. We’ve all been there (and we’re right here behind you).
—Sonia Simone, commenting on Ladders on the Right Wall at Janice Cartier
I adore Sonia. She’s here, there, and everywhere as usual these days, being herself and getting paid for it. (Isn’t that the dream?) But what I really love is when we catch someone in a quiet moment, thinking quickly, right from the heart without a thought for Google juice or PayPal or 2.0 or even social networking, and…
She’s still as utterly wonderful. She’s still as wise. And she’s still talking right to the heart of every small business owner, every entrepreneur, everyone who wants to reach for that dream.
I knew there was a reason I adored her.
Are you putting yourself out there so that you want to throw up on a regular basis? If not, what are you waiting for? Get up, go for it, and get scared. Janice and Sonia and I need more company.
Grow and be well,
Kelly Erickson

Ugh, I get that up-chuck feeling fairly regularly – and now you’re telling me it’s a good thing? LOL! I have to admit to having backed off when I’ve felt that sometimes. Next time, I’ll just make sure I pack the barf bags.
Thanks Kelly, and Sonia.

Melinda,
Yes! I used to do a lot of theatre, and of course that’s a common feeling among actors, that wanting to throw up is a good sign. I hadn’t heard it said like this in a business context, though (Janice is an artist, but an artist who likes to eat, hence the sticky business of… business).
I love how Sonia made it sound like the most natural (and desirable) feeling in the world.
Regards,
Kelly
P.S. The post is great and there are a lot of stunning comments on it—I hope you have a chance to click through!

I did click through and read the other post and comments – including the essays! LOL! I love it when comments add so much more value to the post.

LOL. Janice asked! She should know better than to get her buddies going!
Until later,
Kelly

Asking – that one is scary in itself! I’ve got one of those going up on my blog tomorrow morning, it’s going to be an interesting discussion. And yes, it was a “I feel like throwing up” post when I wrote it!
13 May 2009, 9:40 am
I love the throwing up idea. I say the same – that if you don’t have that ‘oh my god’ feeling that you get on top of a roller coaster then stop whatever you’re aiming for and look for what scares the crap out of you.

Kelly,
My friends do not deliver halfway do they? I am so overwhelmingly grateful for their brilliance and humbled by their willingness to toss gems on my path. Truly grateful.
There are so many smart people there adding so much. I am putting it all into action.
Alex- LOL… on the right track then….;-)
Melinda-Asking is tough.. but sometimes asking is just the thing.
Kelly- LOVE this ” What are you waiting for? Get up, go for it, and get scared.” Love it.

Melinda,
I’ll be peeking in tomorrow to see what gave you such big butterflies!
Alex,
It’s great advice. I can never hear things like this in enough ways—helps me to remind myself!
Janice,
Oh, yes. You wrote an intense post and got rockin’ comments in return. Just what we all wish for.
I have a feeling that every one of us who commented kicked our own butts into a bit higher gear afterward, too. Got to walk the talk, y’know.
(Well, ‘cept Sonia. She’s already in 6th gear, or it looks it from where I sit!)
Until later,
Kelly

LOL. Just so.
Still laughing….
Must go plot campaign/courtship.
Later.

There were many times (during my mis-spent youth) that I felt that pukey feeling. Especially when drinking.
Here I was, thinking I was getting s***-faced.
But looking back, now I realize I was confronting my insecurities and forging a path forward, to follow my dreams.
There. I feel so much better now.

Friar,
I swear I do not know what I did without you, friend. You keep things real.
Now I feel better, too. But I have a funny desire for a pint of Guinness.
Until later,
Kelly

Kelly,
I share your adoration of Sonia. She is so lusciously “Sonia” everywhere – in her email newsletters, Facebook, on her blog, Twitter. I don’t gush over many but she is an exception to the rule.

Okay, it’s now official.
Sonia is a “Cool Kid”.

Karen,
“Lusciously ‘Sonia.’” Exactly!
Goodness. We should all be aiming for lusciously ourselves. What a perfect phrase.
And speaking of lusciously himself…
Friar,
No. You are the Cool Kid. Sonia, she probably just wants to be like you someday.
Nobody can be just like you. There’s only one Bloggers’ Antihero!

I like this. It ties in with the email you sent to me last night (which I will respond to shortly – thank you for listening).
While I’m not sure that what I’m doing makes me want to throw up (because I’ve been rejected so many times it is a way of life!), it does give me a “feeling” of a sort, and maybe that’s why I don’t always let it out there, get it out there, because it is close to me.
Maybe like Alex says – the roller coaster thing.
14 May 2009, 11:55 am
Lusciously… I am liking that…;-)

Timely post. I was just considering posting a personal experience on my blog…nothing earth-shattering, but personal nonetheless. The kind of personal that brings nausea to mind. After seeing/reading so many posts that I connect with, including this one, I think I’ll go ahead and do it
Of course, I don’t have any readers yet so it’s not nearly as frightening as it would be if I had the readership you and so many others have. Funny, that doesn’t make it much easier! *sigh*

Brett,
It’s a matter of degrees, I think. That “feeling”—a feeling of sticking your neck out just a bit father than ever before—that’s a good thing. I’m guessing it’s not the rejection quite as much as it is that trying new tacks is a way of life for Mr. Legree!
Janice,
And I am *totally* stealing that word from Karen. Sounds like it belongs in a presentation.
Charlene,
Haha. I know what you mean about starting out being a good time to go for it, yet still… when I wrote my first more “personal” post—the third post I published here at MCE—I was completely worried about the reception it would get.
*big smile of remembering* I needn’t have worried. It was many weeks before posts here got any reception at all.
Good luck with your new blog. It really is a great time to go for it, and to get used to going for it. Enjoy!
Until later,
Kelly
