That's why instead of focusing on the selling, I focus on helping and getting people to think well of course! The same way that the Halloween candy givers would say "of course" - it's inevitable, but they've already stepped forward and left their porch light on - they're ready to be sold to, they just need a good costume display to take them the final step.

Alex,

You're the dude I'd have wanted to go trick-or-treating with, then.

Watch that "no sales needed," though... hard to get people to hand over the candy that easily in the real world...

Hey maybe there really is something to this goofy theory.

Need more chocolate to think this through...

Later,

Ha! How true for me... I was the sort who assumed that everyone knew what was going on, only went to houses with lights on, said the required "Trick or Treat!" and got my candy.

No sales needed because everyone knew the deal and everyone was happy.

When someone changed the script I got flustered, but if I knew them well enough I gave as good as I got.

Graham,

What I love about that walmart link is the part at the bottom with "What do people buy after looking at this item?"

Urns.

Ugggghh!

P.S. You made me sound so profound. You are hereby invited to come to MCE and summarize all my posts so succinctly. :D

Wendi,

Hello, my friend!

Oh, I feel for you with that costume, but I'll bet you were the talk of the town. Did everyone want your picture?

And *munch munch on leftovers* I know exactly what you mean about the chocolate therapy. Too bad I don't have enough of an excuse with my one trick-or-treating experience to really warrant all this therapy, LOL.

Regards,

Kelly

I HATED halloween. Hated trick or treating. Was way way too shy, especially after the year my overly creative Mom made me a paper mache six foot tree costume and hung my candy bag from hard dried unmovable tree branch arms. All I could see out of was the tiny squirrel hole in the bark.I figured that was OK, so no one could tell how mortified I was...

I still require therapy every halloween to get over that. Luckily chocolate therapy is still rather cheap.

Speaking of spooky ties between Hallowe'en and business... I just saw this:

http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_constraint=0&ic=48_0&search_query=casket&Find.x=0&Find.y=0&Find=Find

This is so wrong -- and so right -- on so many levels. Notice how many are sold out already.

"Life's short and we need the candy..."

Classic!

So what you are saying, if I may, is that if you have to make it, learn how to put on the mask and fake it. We aren't all born salespeople, but we can dress up like someone who is and just pretend.

That's certainly advice I could use.

(I'm off to find my Willy Loman costume right now...)
