Alex,

I hear you. Even if you have "silent" business development help, Alex has to be personally involved in the actual sales to a large extent, so then you're back to the original dilemma.

Gah, for a very personal industry like yours, indeed!

Until later,

That was what I wanted to find when I was running my business. Someone who loved running a business and let me do the business. But what I kept coming up against was "but people are buying you so you can't have someone else doing the building the business stuff"

Gah! ;)

Alex,

It's one of those things that's so logical (once you hear it), you can see a thousand ways to apply it. Looking forward to your lesson-for-artists.

Todd,

Yes, agreed! A restaurant franchisor I used to know always said the worst thing about chefs who own restaurants is that they think they are in business to cook. In reality, they are in business. Period! Cooking's just the business they're in... so he'd rather see a businessman at the head of a restaurant than a chef.

LOL, he probably said it better, but the lesson is one I've carried with me for years. No matter the business you think you're in, it's business first.

& that's about the hardest lesson there is in business.

Regards,

Kelly

That happened to me. I realize now that I was more interested in harmony and inspiration than sales and it put me out of business. You gotta love selling to make it in business.

I'm certain there is a writing lesson in here, but I have to think of it a while longer. One writer/mentor tells us to look for unintended consequences as a way of creating conflict and tension in a story, but that's something completely different.

Once I do think of the underlying lesson-for-artists, I'll be back to add it... ;)

(Because of course artists are looking for that maximum customer experience too, you know)
